Kids say the funniest things

A kindergarten gym teacher had a student inquire about a burn that they had on their elbow.  The teacher told him that it was an accident and nothing to worry about.  The teacher then asked the student if he ever had accidents. The student replied... "Well, I used to when I wore pull-ups, but now I wear underwear so I don't have them anymore."

Candy Cane Discovery

and yet, I'm having another "out of touch moment"...sigh...maybe I've heard this before but forgot!

Do you know what a "Candy Cane Really is"?  One myth is that many years ago a candy maker from Indiana wanted to make candy that would symbolize the true meaning of Christmas, which is "Jesus", to teach children symbolism. The hard candy was shaped like a " J " to represent that Jesus is our rock of all ages. The candy was white, that stands for the pureness of Jesus, and the red... represents the blood that Jesus shed to save us from our sins. So the next time you see a candy cane, take a minute to remember the real meaning of 'Christmas'.

The above paragraph I found but then I also found this myth snippet as well..."Candy canes stiped in red represent the blood of Christ, the white stripes represent his purity," maybe to some people this statement is true, but they didn’t start out that way. Candy canes were originally all white in color. The color red, which is closely associated with the Christmas season for many religious reasons, was added during the mid-19th century when candy canes first started being used as decorations on Christmas trees. But the red-and-white variety of candy canes was not specifically first manufactured as religious symbolism.

It is amazing to find little facts on the internet, as I also found this little bit of info as well:
"Candy canes were first made as a decoration on Christmas trees."  No, candy canes even pre-date the tradition of the Christmas trees.  It wasn't unti the mid 19th century, about the time when widespread use of Christmas trees became popular at Christmas time that the candy cane became connected with trees and Christmas.

The cnady cane tradition originates in Europe where the Christmas tree decorations where primarily made of food - typically cookies and candies.  This tradition at the holiday symbolically expressed "thanks for our daily bread" as well as providing a Christmas treat for the children. The candy cane thus represented the sheperd's hook.  Candy canes on the Christmas tree symbolize the shepherds in the fields on the first Chirstmas night.  Shephers who heard the angel chorus and came to worship at the crib of the newborn King.  Inexpensive yet delightful, candy canes make a wonderful treat for the entire family.

Stinky Boots for Santa

‎Dealing with "stinky boots" & not feeling prepared for this candy in a boot thing on the eve of the 5th and again on the eve of the 6th. In all of my living years, I've never experienced this custom. Thought I had Jenna convinced last night that this is a custom that Santa only does in a foreign country. She came home from school today and says to me "nope, the kids at school say that there is a second chance that Santa will come tonight!" All I have to say is "When did Santa start coming so early?" I'm feeling a little out of touch with the world lately! First no double spaces after periods and now Santa comes not only on Christmas but earlier in the month too? I am so out of touch! She put her stinky boots by the fireplace so that Santa can leave her a present in her boots. I tried to talk to her about this custom and the fact that he may not swing by here but she started crying. Yup, that pretty much confirmed that I had to make a trip into town. Personally, candy in a boot is kind of a turn off for me. So, yeah, feeling kind of guilty, I put on my street clothes, jumped into the car and just got back from making a trip into town at 10:30 at night with goodies in hand so that I can put them in her stinky boots. Yum, Yum.....

Low Maintenance Christmas Light Display

I've seen this funny picture before but just had to post it here as it cracks me up every time I see it! I love this persons sense of humor!  Plus there is a little humorous joke that goes along with it...

And the story goes a little something like this...

*I left a note for my spouse after a little argument about putting up Christmas lights...
"Hi Sweetheart,  First, I want to say how sorry I am about getting into an argument about putting up the Christmas lights.

I guess that sometimes I feel you may be pushing me too hard when you want something.
But, I realize that I was wrong and I am apologizing for being such a hard-headed guy. All I want is for you to be happy and be able to enjoy the holiday season.

Nothing brightens the Christmas spirit like Christmas lights! I took the time to hang the lights for you today and now I'm off to Jerry's Bar to watch the game!

Again, I am very sorry for the way I acted yesterday.

See you later…

Love you…  XOXOXXOXOXOXOOO"

Buckle up!

Tonight Jenna says to me "Mom, in the olden days, did you have to wear seat belts?” I was having flash backs of saying that phrase “olden days” to my grand parents. After I regained my composure from shock of being associated with the olden days, I started chuckling and I replied to her “No, we did not wear seat belts and on top of that, we were basically like monkeys flying around in the back seats of the car.” She shouts out “awe Mom, that is soooooo not fair!” I say to her, “yeah, I know, it’s amazing we survived and be prepared…life is sometimes not fair!”

I told you... No Double Spaces After Periods Ever!

Okay, so I am going back to school after the age of forty (*sigh).  I was taught when learning how to type back in high school during the eighties... to double space after the period in a sentence.  I was working with a group of people in my class today that are under the age of 25 and when I contibuted my part of the assignment which was a paragraph of about 5-7 sentences, it had double spaces after the periods (as that is the way I was taught and it is something I do without even thinking about).  I was however corrected by the 'young ones that this style is "odd looking" and "not protocol."  This young guy proceeded to go through my work and "correct it to single spacing."  I personally think it makes it look crammed, probably because I am use to seeing double spacing.  So, I am curious... taking a poll here, how many people here do double spaces and how many do a single space after a period in a sentence?

Forgive my nonsense as I also forgive the nonsense of those who think they talk sense.

It's all in the level of hugs...

small waist, weight loss, scale

It's all in the level of hugs, in the literal sense.  So I got a good laugh from Jenna in the form of a perspective this week.  Jenna over the summer was saying when she gave me a hug "Mom, you seem to be getting skinnier."  I would say "well I may be a couple pounds lighter but I really am not all that much less in pounds, so I don't know why you think that sweetie." I was a little confused with her perception....either she was figuring out how flattery makes people feel good inside or MY SCALE IS BROKEN! I was not feeling any skinnier so therefore I was thinking perhaps she was trying to butter me up for something special since I really had not lost any significant weight.  One thing quite significant is that over the summer she has grown quite a bit in height.  She commented on my weight again this week... "Mom, you sure are getting thin!"  Ding, ding, ding .....I figured it out!  Granted, my waist is smaller than my hips (thank God!) but has not gotten any smaller in the last seven years......and she is getting taller....so she is not wrapping her arms around my hips anymore, her arms have moved up to the level of my waist!

If youth really were wise, it would miss most of the fun.

Sometimes I just sit and wonder...

The opposite gender of female...yeah, I'm referring to the male species.  Why do some feel the need to lie to women?  What on earth attracks me to the ones that are good at pulling the wool over my eyes?  Are attractive men good at being deceitful?  Especially the ones that are so shallow....

...why am I so naive to believe all their garbly goop?  Why am I a sucker for this behavior?

11-11-11

Well, I made it through 11-11-11 at 11:11a.m. and 11:11p.m.    No bells or whistles.... no earth ending events, no Apocalypse...
Whew, what a relief!  I was hoping to pause for a moment to reflect on where and what I was doing at exactly 11:11a.m. and 11:11p.m. however I did not remember to reflect.  Perhaps I should of set the alarm on my iPhone.  Silly me... it's kind of like falling asleep on New Year Eve!

Crazy Digital Media Halloween Pumpkin

okay, here is my take on mess free Halloween decorating....   Photo Shop Pumpkin!  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!  This is my nephew's pumpkin and I decided to take a picture of it.  He had a couple stickers for the eyes.  When I looked at it with that crazy looking nose my mind began to wander....I could envision it with some googly eyes and funky hair.  I was tinkering around with my photo editing stuff and this is what I came up with! Stonecrop Sedum plant for hair! My vision came to life... BOO!  The only thing is that you don't get to enjoy the pumpkin seeds ;(

"Mom, I just can't go any further!" my daughter  Jenna blurts out.

We took the family on a leisurely ten mile bike ride this weekend through the Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin.  The fall weather was absolutely perfect and the colors were incredible.  Jenna does not have a bike with gear speed changes on it so she was getting a little tired out on some of the hills.  She started to get really whiny and such about a third of the way through.  I tried to console her that we could stop and take a break so she could regain her strength.  If she would of had a million dollars, she would of paid that to go back to the car.  She really was not having much fun at all.  I told her that she was going to have to deal with it because we had been looking forward to a day out like this for a long time.

She continued on her bike ...tweeting a few "Mom, my legs hurt so much", "My legs are going to fall off Mom!" and  "Mom, I've got to stop for a bit."  Eventually we came upon a tourist Light House and decided to take a little longer break.  As we walked up the path to the light house, I decided to give her a little wisdom while we held hands.  "Jenna, you know, this may seem like one of the hardest days that you have ever had but your perseverance will give you a great satisfaction once you have finished the bike ride."  She quickly asked "Mom, what is perseverance?"  I reply to her, "Well, perseverance is when you feel like you have given your all but you know you still have to keep on going.  Even with all of that hard work, you push every bit of energy out that you have to finish the task at hand.  Then once you have finished you feel like you have accomplished something great because as you reflect back at the beginning when you really felt like you couldn't.  It is just a great feeling of satisfaction knowing that you have finished.  I'm sure you will feel like that at the end of our bike ride."  She stops, and looks at me with careful consideration blurting out in a bold demanding monotone voice, "ah, Mom, (*her taking a deep breath) seriously... I will not..."

I could not help but laugh at that reply she gave me.  I looked at her face and how certain and confident she was....it just made me want to giggle.  She sure has a confidence in her that I wish I would of had at the age of seven.

Amazingly enough, we did finish our bike ride and her legs did not fall off!
