I saw this on facebook and a lot of people had it wrong. Okay, drum roll for all of you that need the answer.....
The rule of math, for this math problem, is that you do the multiplication first and then solve. Order of operations is
"PEMDAS," which explained is by following these rules:
Parentheses First.
Exponents next.
Multiply or Divide before you Add or Subtract.
Otherwise just go left to right.
Step-by-step solution for 4x4+4x4+4-4x4=:
4x4+4x4+4-4x4=
1st step do multiplication:
4x4=16, +, 4x4=16, +, 4 , -, 4x4=16
which then looks like this:
16 + 16 + 4 - 16 =
then:
16 + 16 = 32
32 + 4 = 36
36 - 16 = 20
the final answer is 20!
The answer is 20.

There are parentheses ! Your imagining things.
ReplyDeleteThere are no parentheses anywhere. They're not imagining anything. It's the order of operations.
DeleteOh in the order of operations explanation. Yes it says parentheses first because that's the order of operations. PEMDAS. Just because there are no parentheses in the problem doesn't mean you should skip the P when you're explaining PEMDAS. Not imagining anything.
Delete...just laying the ground work out for the rules and so first you are to look for parentheses. That particular problem has no parentheses so that means you then move on to the next order of operations and down the line.
DeleteDidn't they teach you all in school that you have to read and understand the question before answering? The possible answers are either "yes" or "no", as the question is "Are you good at Math?". It doesn't request at any time to give an answer to that Math operation.
ReplyDelete... too funny! I never thought about it that way, lol
DeleteBut if ~
ReplyDeletelets get technical!!!
As 1st graders we are told to break
the problem down to make it easier.
4x4=4+4+4+4.. right?
so the equation would look like this :
4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4-4+4+4+4=44
As 3rd graders we are told to stop breaking it
down and to go from left to right it would look like this
4x4=16+4=20x4=80+4=84-4=80x4=320
So... what is your answer ???
(4x4)=16+(4x4)=16
ReplyDelete16+16=32 +(4-4)=0
32x4= 128
its rigt!!!
(4 x 4)+(4 x 4)+4 (-4 x 4)=16 + 16 + 4 x -16=16 + 16 - 64=36-64= - 32
ReplyDeleteEverybody writes the first part identically,but when we get to the last part,it's variable answers..
But if we follow the rule that we place parentheses first,
then we multiply,
and add secondly - we will have to put parentheses before -4 an after the last 4. The last part will now be: +4x-16 = - 64
- which gives us: 16 + 16 - 64=32-64= - 32
+ and - is always minus - ergo -4 x 4 is -16
then we get : +4 x (-16) becauce with a number in front of parenthesis,is always multiplied with whats inside the parenth...an when - (minus)and +(pluss) always is -(minus) it is + 4 x - 16 = - 64
The right way to find right answer is : 16 + 16 -64 = (32+(-64)) = - 32
The answer is: Yes, I'm good in math :)
ReplyDelete4 X 4 + 4 X 4 + 4 - 4 x 4 = 16 +16 +4-16 = 20
4x4 = 16 +4 = 20x4 = 80 +4 = 84-4 = 80x4 = 320
good
ReplyDeleteI guessed 4 c:
ReplyDeleteI also guessed 42 c:
Deletewhat a load a shite
